Portal Progress

Two weeks from tomorrow, Rassera will begin his journey to Miami with the South Gate in tow. This officially marks the start of crunch time!

The South Gate portal is truly taking shape! More lights have been incorporated, and most of the seams have been concealed through further lava foam sculpting.

While the weather has warmed up, we’ve left the portal in the living room assembled, as we found the setup works well for sculpting and detail work. Sarai is currently adding diffusion material – repurposed and heat-treated orange transluscent shower curtains – to the lights, enhancing their appearance and creating a more striking hot lava effect.

When carefully melted with a heat gun and sculpted some, transluscent orange shower curtain makes the perfect diffusion material for the LEDs, and hardens into a stiffer plastic.

Meanwhile, warmer temperatures have made the workshop more comfortable for Rassera’s work, and he’s on track to complete the construction of the platform stairs by tomorrow. This coming weekend will see our final push of significant labor and finishing touches. The subsequent week will be dedicated to addressing any remaining minor issues and finalizing all the details.

Two sets of stairs will allow visitors to ascend to the platform, walk through the South Gate, and descend again by the ceremonial fire.
